2014 Limited Edition Medallion Cover - Centenary of WWI - Troops Depart #0,997/2,000
World War I, 1914-1918, was the 'Great War', the 'war to end all wars'. On November 1, 1914, 30,000 young Australians and New Zealanders departed from Albany in Western Australia on board ships bound for Egypt and the battlefields of the Great War. They had never heard of Gallipoli and had no idea where they were headed and the fact that many would never return home.
The most important battleground was the 'Western Front' in France and Belgium where great battles were fought - Fromelles, the Somme, Bullecourt, Messines, Passchendaele and Villers–Bretonneux.
The design on this stamp and medallion cover commemorates Australia's part in the first months of the 'Great War' –Troops departing from Australia.
Postmarked on the First Day of Issue - 22 April 2014 at Albany, WA, 6330, Australia.
